Over the next eight weeks, I'll explore how neuroscience can supercharge our presentation approach. We'll examine strategies rooted in brain science to help us capture attention, build emotional connections, communicate with clarity and more. This week, we'll focus on how to grab and maintain attention—an essential first step in any effective presentation.


Techniques to Capture Attention

Imagine you're presenting to a room full of people, and you notice their eyes drifting to their phones or watches. It's a common scenario, but neuroscience offers solutions to keep your audience engaged from start to finish.

Start with a Hook

Kick-off with a powerful hook. The brain craves novelty and emotion, so start with something unexpected—a shocking statistic, a provocative question or a compelling story. Stories, in particular, are effective because they activate multiple brain areas, making your content more relatable and memorable. For example, instead of starting with data about climate change, tell a personal story about how it has affected you or someone you know. This makes your presentation not just informative but also engaging and memorable. Please see my previous blog post on the power of storytelling.


Visual Aids

Visual aids are another powerful tool. Our brains process images much faster than text, so incorporating strong visuals can help maintain attention. Use striking images, clear infographics and minimal text on your slides. This approach not only keeps the audience visually engaged but also aids in the retention of information. The images I use here in this blog are the same types of images I love to use when presenting, ideally a powerful image covering the whole screen and just a few words. This is enough to guide me through my storytelling and doesn't compete with me on stage.


Embrace Emotion

Emotions play a crucial role in attention and memory. When you connect with your audience emotionally, you create a more profound and more lasting impact. Share stories that evoke emotions—joy, sadness, anger or surprise. Emotional engagement can make your message resonate more profoundly, leading to better retention and persuasion.
